members of His church

The Christian religion is the worship and service of Jesus Christ. It’s not Mary we worship, but her Son. We worship neither saints, angels, a law code, nor even God’s Spirit. It’s JESUS who is to be honored. The Bible is our guide.

What Should Christians Read?
Book Notes is one of the many things I'd like to
place here from two recent issues of
Leroy Garrett's Once More With Love publication.

pretty line       I prophesied that Leroy would add to his book list one just published by College Press and written by Steven Clark Goad, "Gullible's Travels." Steve preaches for the Lord's church in Blythe, California. He writes compellingly about growing up and living with Christ. And Leroy did. His postpaid price is $19. You should have it.

NORVEL YOUNG's new book, Living Lights, Shining Stars, draws upon his long and interesting life in Churches of Christ, in pulpit as well as academia. This book tugs at your heart as he candidly shares both the lows and highs of his eventful life. It also lists his 10 secrets for becoming the light of the world. $17 postpaid from Leroy Garrett, 1300 Woodlake Dr, Denton TX 76205.

Those of us who have read Tom Olbricht's Hearing God's Word: My Life with Scripture in Churches of Christ give it high marks for several reasons: It is helpful in learning to handle the Bible aright, providing insightful principles of interpretation. It helps to define who members of Churches of Christ really are, both the good and not so good. It is an autobiography of one of our more thoughtful and inspiring leaders [Ray's comment--from Missouri, naturally]. To get the book, send $13 to the address given above.

GENE SHELBURNE has proven himself to be an interesting and resourceful writer, one who has something to SAY! His first book, The God Who Puts Us Back Together, was so much on target that it called for another titled Expect The Light. Both books speak to the heart in that they tell us how to deal with life's darkest moments. They are $13 each or $25 for both. Ideal as a gift, or to read and pass along. [Ray's comment-- read more about Gene's work by link from our links page.]

EDWARD FUDGE's The Fire That Consumes challenges the traditional view that the fire of hell is endless. The author says that the wicked will be punished for sure, but by fire that consumes or "destroys" as the Bible puts it. Impressive presentation. $14 postpaid. As all books here mentioned, available from Leroy Garrett.

Those who have purchased The Works of Carl Ketcherside are delighted -- and the price is right, only $185 for 12 large, handsome, hardcover volumes, postpaid. Reprints like this have a way of going fast. You'd better order now if interested. Our price, says Leroy, is 15% off the publisher's (College Press of Joplin) retail price. And, says Leroy,

I am of course pleased that my new edition of The Stone-Campbell Movement is selling well and is appreciated by the rank and file. Much of this second edition is rewritten, and there are several new chapters. Many are sold for church libraries and college classes. An appropriate gift to anyone interested in the history of the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. Only $25.

I've written a review of Christians On the Oregon Trail by Jerry Rushford for the new Stone-Campbell Journal, so I got well acquainted with it. I highly recommend it to those interested in regional accounts of "our" history. $17 postpaid.

We can still offer five bound volumes of Restoration Review, which is 10 years of publication, 1983-92, 400 pages each. These are hard cover, matching volumes, with dust jackets. Each volume has an introduction and a table of contents. While we had thousands of these bound, we now have only 87 left. You may order individual volumes at $15 each. All five volumes, $65 postpaid.

<<Ray adds -- If time permitted, I would type here from the October 1997 volume of Once More With Love, Leroy's writing on They Differed But Still United. If you haven't already read this study, since time doesn't permit that it now be typed into this web page, I urge you to write to Leroy and ask him to send you a copy of the #26, October 1997 issue of his ONCE MORE WITH LOVE. Or let me know you want one, and I'll forward your request to him.>>

<< And here's a note from another brother about the A.D.70 theories -- My book ESCHATOLOGY: The AD 70 doctrine can be yours for $18. This book has been highly recommended by Dr. Tom Olbricht, professor emeritus [ACU, and Pepperdine]. Grace and Peace, jdubsr@aol.com J. Paul Du Bois >>
